What Causes Stains in Pools? A swimming pool stain can occur quickly. In fact, this swimming pool problem can happen overnight which is simply due to metal objects left on your pool bottom. Staining such as light violet stains can also result from copper and cyanuric acid.
Plaster stains are very unsightly in any swimming pool or spa and can quickly reduce the attractiveness of your swimming pool facility.
There are other known causes of staining in pools besides copper and cyanuric acid.
These other elements are the more common ones for causing stains that a pool operator/owner may encounter.
They include minerals such as precipitated:
- Iron.
- Copper.
- Manganese.
- Plain dirt.
Mineral problems in your swimming pool or spa will be a tough issue to deal with; you are not the only one who is trying to maintain or achieve a stain free pool. In fact, this type of swimming pool problem is an issue for many. The pool and spa industry are still trying to get a handle on this problem.
As a pool or spa operator/owner, you must remember that through regular pool water testing and maintaining good water chemistry, you can avoid swimming pool problems such as pool staining. Ask anyone in the pool maintenance business and they will tell you; that maintaining spa or pool water is far less costly than:
- The cost of removing a pool stain.
- Acid washing a swimming pool or spa.
- Resurfacing your swimming pool/spa.
Having a pool stain will not result in any illness of your pool bathers; however, as I mentioned earlier, stains in your swimming pool take away from the beauty and attractiveness of your pool. Another negative effect of having a pool stain is the fact...that your pool will appear dirty looking; hence, no one will want to enter and take a swim.
Other Causes For Swimming Pool Stain
Staining of your swimming pool or spa can also come from other crucial factors such as:
- Your pool water having a pH level that is too high.
- The total alkalinity level of your pool is too high.
- The total dissolved solids (TDS) of your pool are too high. Also resulting in cloudy pool water.
How To Remove Pool Stains
If you have not notice already, the problem of having stains in your spa or swimming pool, is related to your water chemistry deficiencies and errors. For this reason, you must constantly test and correct the parameters of your water chemistry. This process will reduce your staining problems for both your spa and swimming pool.
It is also especially important that you identify the actual source/s and take the corrective steps needed if you want a stain free pool or spa. Failure to identify the source of the pool stain/s before undertaking a removal program, may result in new stains forming. Stains in spas and swimming pools often become exceedingly difficult to remove.
This is usually when they are allowed to be on the pool surface for too long. There are many pool products available that are made specifically for stain removing. Still your success with any of these products will vary. In some cases where your pool plaster is badly degraded, rough, and porous, the removal of a pool stain or stains may prove difficult. At this point...although harsh, acid washing is sometimes considered.
Still this process is a last resort. Why? Because it is a dangerous and damaging process. Acid washing can limit the life span of your pool or spa (surfaces) plaster. I should mention here that some stains that are darker in appearance, are often the result of plant matter...such as leaves, branches, and acorns. Depending on where you live.
These plant matter fall in and settle at the bottom of your pool and if left alone, will leave a stain.
This resulting stain is from the tannins found in these organic materials.
What is the best way to remove stains from pool? These types of stains can also be removed through bleaching with chlorine. The fastest way to get rid of these stains is to apply chlorine straight onto the discoloration.
Either way, you must maintain your pool water chemistry.
To do so, you must carry out regular testing of your pool water so that you avoid swimming pool problems such as staining. Doing so will save you a lot of headaches and complaints from swimmers about having a swimming pool stain.
